Pursuit of a Dream and a Degree

While thinking about the process of socialization that one must go through in order to become a fighter, the first question that came to mind was, what practices and or processes are involved in this socialization process? Drawing on previous research as well as my own experiences, I have made the following assumptions. First, the process can be divided into three sub-processes: body work, emotion work, and identity work. Second, each of these sub-processes will be made up of its own set of practices, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Body work
    • Diet
    • Exercise
  • Emotion work
    • Controlling fear
    • Instilling fear in others
    • Overcoming inhibitions
    • Building self-esteem and/or confidence
  • Identity work
    • Identity formation
    • Managing and/or negotiating identities

My proposed methodology (which I intend to blog about at a later date) will provide me with an opportunity to confirm or deny the existence of this socialization process as well…
